Mindo's 4 Altitude Zones: A Birder's Guide to Cloud Forest Habitats
The Chocó Andino of Pichincha is unique among birding destinations because of its dramatic altitudinal gradient. Within a 90-minute drive from Mindo, you can pass through four distinct ecological zones, each with its own bird community. Understanding these zones helps you plan which tours and sites will give you the species you most want to see.
Páramo (3,500–4,500 m)
The highest zone is open grassland above the treeline. At Antisana Ecological Reserve (4,000 m), the star species is the Andean Condor — the largest flying bird in the world. Other páramo specialties include the endemic Ecuadorian Hillstar hummingbird, Tawny Antpitta, Andean Lapwing, and Carunculated Caracara. The landscape is stark and volcanic, with the snow-capped Antisana volcano as backdrop.
High Forest (2,000–3,500 m)
Elfin forest and high cloud forest harbor the Sword-billed Hummingbird (the only bird whose bill is longer than its body), Plate-billed Mountain Toucan, and Tanager Finch. Zuroloma at 2,800 m is the best site for high-altitude hummingbird feeders. The Bellavista area provides excellent access to this zone.
Cloud Forest (1,200–2,000 m)
This is the heart of Mindo birding. The Andean Cock-of-the-rock displays at dawn in leks scattered through the cloud forest. Giant and Chestnut-naped Antpittas skulk on the forest floor. Toucan Barbets, Golden-headed Quetzals, and mixed tanager flocks animate the canopy. Paz de las Aves is the iconic site in this zone.
Humid Lowland Forest (400–1,200 m)
The lowest elevation zone hosts Chocó endemics: the Vulnerable Long-wattled Umbrellabird, Club-winged Manakin (the only bird that makes sound with its wings), Chocó Toucan, and Rose-faced Parrot. Primera de Mayo and Milpe Bird Sanctuary are the key sites. The lowland species are often the hardest to see and most rewarding.
How to Cover All Zones
Our 7-day expeditions (Deep Chocó and Andes & Condor) cover all four altitude zones in a single trip, maximizing species diversity. For shorter visits, a 3-day package covers cloud forest and either the highlands or lowlands. Day trips target specific zones and species.
