Ecuador is the most bird-dense country on Earth. In an area roughly the size of Colorado, it harbors more bird species than the United States and Canada combined. This extraordinary concentration is the result of four distinct geographic regions converging in a small territory: the Andes, the Amazon, the Pacific coast, and the Galápagos Islands.

The Chocó Andino: Ecuador's Premier Birding Region

The Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena biodiversity hotspot runs along the Pacific slope of the Andes from Colombia into Ecuador. The Ecuadorian portion — known as the Chocó Andino of Pichincha — was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognizing its global biological significance.

Mindo sits at the heart of this hotspot, making it the ideal base for exploring the Chocó. From here, you can access páramo at 4,000 m, cloud forest at 2,000 m, and tropical lowlands at 600 m — all within a 90-minute drive.

Why Ecuador Over Other Birding Destinations?

Compact geography

See 4 ecosystems without long domestic flights. Mindo is 2 hours from Quito.

Species density

More species per km² than any country. A 7-day trip can yield 300+ species.

Accessibility

Paved roads, established lodges, reliable local guides. No expedition-level logistics needed.

Year-round birding

No monsoon season shutdowns. The Cock-of-the-rock leks are active 365 days.

Value

High-quality guided birding at a fraction of the cost of Costa Rica or East Africa.

Planning Your Ecuador Birding Trip

Most international birders fly into Quito (UIO), which sits at 2,850 m in the Andes. From there, the Chocó Andino and Mindo are just 2 hours west. A minimum 3-day stay in the Mindo area gives you an excellent introduction; 7 days allows for a comprehensive birding sweep from páramo to lowlands.

We recommend hiring a local guide — the difference in species detected is dramatic. An experienced guide in Mindo will find 2–3x more species than birding independently, thanks to knowledge of calls, territories, and seasonal patterns built over decades.
