Sword-billed Hummingbird
Ensifera ensifera
The Sword-billed Hummingbird is the only bird in the world whose bill is longer than its body (excluding tail). This extraordinary adaptation allows it to feed from deep tubular flowers — particularly Passiflora mixta and Datura — that no other pollinator can reach. It is the sole pollinator of several Andean plant species, making it a keystone species for high-altitude ecosystems.
Because of its enormous bill, it is the only hummingbird that perches with its bill tilted upward to maintain balance. At hummingbird feeders near Mindo (particularly Zuroloma at 2,800 m), it is a reliable visitor and a favorite subject for photographers.
This species inhabits the high Andes from Venezuela to Bolivia, preferring elfin forest and páramo edges between 2,500 and 3,500 meters. In the Mindo area, the upper road toward Nono and the Zuroloma feeders are the best spots.
