Three decades dedicated to the birds of Mindo

Our story
Birding Mindo is a family-run company founded approximately 30 years ago in Mindo, Ecuador, dedicated to nature tourism and birdwatching.
Our founders, Hugolino Oñate and Alicia Toapanta, are recognized for their contribution to the knowledge and conservation of the region's birdlife, plants, and orchids.
Over the years we have guided thousands of visitors from around the world through the trails of the Chocó Andino, sharing our passion for birds and the cloud forest.

Hugolino Oñate
Founder & Lead Guide — Birding Mindo
Hugolino has spent over 30 years studying and guiding in the cloud forests of Mindo and the Chocó Andino. Born and raised in the region, his intimate knowledge of bird calls, behavior, and exact territories allows him to locate species that other guides miss.
Beyond birding, Hugolino is recognized for his expertise in native orchids and plants of the region. He actively contributes to reforestation projects with native species and participates in community-based conservation initiatives in the Chocó Andino UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Conservation commitment
We actively participate in reforestation projects using native plants and local orchids, helping preserve the ecosystems that make Mindo a world-class birding destination. We believe that responsible tourism is the best tool to protect these forests.
